Procedures for Hazardous Agent Communication via SASP and Orange Cage Cards

2026-1020 flowchart

  1. IACUC Protocol: The Researcher completes the IACUC protocol and identifies all hazardous agents required for animal research in the Hazardous Agents section (https://research.uky.edu/cayuse-ao).
  2. Risk Assessment: UK Animal Research Compliance Manager reviews agents in use and emails the PI with a SharePoint link to the completed SASP for each hazardous agent in their protocol that presents a risk to the health of animal handlers.
  3. Planning to Begin Research: The Researcher fills out a DLAR Hazardous Agent Use Request Form. This request must include the PI name, IACUC protocol #, and hazardous agents involved.
  4. Research Begins: The Researcher emails the completed SASP(s) and the DLAR Hazardous Agent Use Request form to the DLAR housing area supervisor, who will place them in the Service Request binder of the room where the animal is being housed. The PI also completes an orange Hazardous Agent Awareness Cage Card for each cage housing animals administered hazardous agents and places the orange card on the corresponding animal cage.
  5. When use of the hazardous agent has concluded and the period of exposure has ended, the Researcher removes the orange card from the cage(s), and removes the corresponding SASP(s) and Hazardous Agent Request form from the Service Request binder.
