Radiation Worker Registration Form

Guidelines for Wearing a Dosimetry Badge

Location

Wear the badge in the area that is most likely to be exposed to radiation. It is best to be worn between the chest and waist. If you’re pregnant, wear the badge close to your abdomen.

Label

Make sure the label is facing out.

Over or Under Lead Apron

If you wear a lead apron, the badge should be worn over the apron, not under it.

Finger Dosimeter

If you have a finger dosimeter, wear it as a ring on your dominant hand with the label facing the palm. If you are wearing gloves, it goes under the gloves.

Pregnant Workers

Pregnant radiation workers should wear a fetal monitor close to the fetus to get the most accurate dose reading.

Here are some helpful tips:

  • Wear the badge every day while working.
  • Return the badge on time. The dosimetry badge is replaced quarterly and assigned to the lab you are working in. They will be sent for exchange to that location. If the badge is not returned on time, it may incur a charge.
  • Don’t loan or borrow badges.
  • Don’t wear the badge during personal x-rays or nuclear medicine procedures.
  • Store the badge in a safe place when not in use.
  • Notify your Radiation Safety Office if you lose your badge, your job duties change, or you’re terminating your job.
