Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW)

The Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) was established by the Laboratory Animal Welfare Act, which was passed by Congress in 1966 and the first federal law regulating animal research.  To receive PHS funds, institutions must have an Animal Welfare Assurance approved by OLAW.

University Resources

The following is a list of offices that are tasked with various aspects of compliant animal research at the University of Kentucky.  

Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)
The purpose of the IACUC is to certify humane treatment of any and all laboratory and classroom animals.
Office of the Attending Veterinarian (OAV)
The Attending Veterinarian (AV) is a federally required position and the lead veterinarian for the University of Kentucky.
Department of Lab Animal Resources (DLAR)
The Division of Laboratory Animal Resources is a support unit for animal-based research at the University of Kentucky.
UK Occupational Health & Safety (OHS)
For exposure assessments & monitoring, respiratory protection, ergonomics, or ventilation questions, concerns or information.
