Radiation Safety Training Program- The Who, What, When & Where

The Radiation Safety Office (RSO) provides a series of training courses to ensure personnel understand radiation hazards, regulatory requirements, and safe operating procedures. Training Is Required before assuming duties involving radioactive materials or radiation-producing devices and whenever there is a significant change in duties, regulations, license terms, or equipment. The RSO may exempt users from training based on prior experience and training documentation. 

 

     WHO:

Individuals who directly handle radioactive material or radiation-producing machines are referred to as occupational radiation workers and are required to complete radiation safety training. All UK employees and students working with X-Ray or Radioactive Material must receive On-Site & Initial Radiation Safety Training, as per Federal and State regulations, before starting as a radiation worker.

 

     WHAT:

  • There are 3 Training Parts to be completed.
  • PART 1- Is On-Site Training (on the job training) which must be provided by the Authorized User or Unit Supervisor at the individual's place of work. A completed on-site training checklist is provided to the individual as evidence of receiving this part of the training. The On-site and Initial training enables an individual to begin as a radiation worker.
  • PART 2Is Initial Training: which enables all new employees to be registered and start work. This training is a lecture based on Individual job type lasting about 1 hour. You will receive an outline when you come to the training.

     

     WHEN: 

    Lectures are tailored to job type:

  • Radioactive Material Users- Trainings are held every Tuesday from 9 for Radioisotope Users
    • X-ray Device Users- every Thursday at 1:30pm for Radiation-Producing Machine Users.

PART 3-Role-Specific Training (prerequisite: Initial Training)

  • Basic Radiation Safety TrainingPertains to Radioactive Material Users. This Training coarse Researcher workers are required to attend this course in addition to the Initial Training which covers safety using radioactive materials and regulations. This is a 3-hour course and includes a test. No paperwork is required, and a certificate will be emailed to you once completed. Please see our website for specific dates and times.
  • Analytical X-Ray Training – For X-ray Device Users. (On-Line Training Coarse) Please see our website to register and complete the course.
  • Uranyl Acetate Training – For Uranyl Acetate Users. (On-Line Training Coarse)

IMPORTANT:

  • Training Is a Regulatory Requirement before assuming duties involving radioactive materials or radiation-producing devices.
  • The Worker Registration & On-Site Training forms must be completed and signed by the Authorized User/ PI who holds the license to the lab you will be working under before attending Initial Training and receiving a dosimetry badge if applicable. Radioactive Materials

There are 3 training courses the worker must attend:

The 1st Training is On-Site Training (on the job training) which must be provided by the Authorized User or Unit Supervisor at the individual's place of work. Please arrive about 10 minutes early to sign in and process your paperwork. If you cannot make this scheduled time, call the Radiation Safety Office at (859)-323-6777 to schedule a specific appointment. This training is a lecture lasting about 1 hour, and you will receive an outline when you come to the training.

The 3rd part is the Basic Radiation Safety Training and is offered once a month at the Radiation Safety Office, 102 Dimock Animal Pathology Building. Research workers are required to attend this course in addition to the Initial Training which covers safety using radioactive materials and regulations. This is a 3-hour course and includes a test. No paperwork is required, and a certificate will be emailed to you once completed. Please see our website for specific dates and times.
