Radiation Safety

To protect the University of Kentucky community and the environment by ensuring the safe, secure, and compliant use of radioactive materials, radiation-producing equipment, and lasers through expert guidance, regulatory stewardship, education, and the principles of ALARA as required by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Cabinet for Health and Family Services.

What We Do

• Administer the university's radioactive materials licensing and permitting program.
• Provide radiation safety training and consultation.
• Manage external and internal dosimetry programs.
• Calibrate radiation survey instruments.
• Oversee radioactive waste management.
• Coordinate procurement and inventory of radioactive materials.
• Maintain radiation-producing machine inventories.
• Administer the university's laser safety program.
• Support compliance with Nuclear Regulatory Commission and Kentucky regulations.
