Welcome to the University of Kentucky's Radiation Safety Team!

UK safety begins with you!

Our Mission

As required by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission & the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services, UKY is required to use, to the extent practical, procedures and engineering controls based upon sound radiation protection principles to achieve occupational doses and doses to members of the public that are as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA).
The Radiation Safety team is responsible for all aspects of radioactive materials use at UKY. The radiation protection program includes permitting use of radioactive materials, external and internal dosimetry, survey meter calibration, radiation safety training, radioactive waste management, and procurement of radioactive materials. The unit is also responsible for radiation producing machine inventories and laser safety programs.
