The University of Kentucky Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) is responsible for carrying out the functions required under the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules and UK Administrative Regulation 6.9. 

The IBC is responsible for reviewing recombinant and/or synthetic nucleic acid molecule and biohazardous research conducted at or sponsored by the institution, regardless of funding source or location of research, for compliance with the NIH Guidelines as specified in Section III, Experiments Covered by the NIH and other appropriate guidelines and University policies, and approving those research projects that are found to conform to the NIH Guidelines, UK policies, and other federal, state, and local regulations regarding biological safety.
