Allergen Concerns

Allergic reactions are common in people working with laboratory animals. Symptoms may include sneezing, itchy eyes, skin rashes, and in severe cases, asthma, or anaphylaxis. Major allergens come from rodent urine, dander, and saliva. Reduce exposure by working in a clean, well‑ventilated area, using safe work practices, and wearing appropriate PPE such as lab coats and disposable gloves. Avoid touching your face and wash your hands thoroughly after removing gloves. Contact UK Occupational Health & Safety at OHS@uky.edu or 859-257-2924 in the event you are experiencing symptoms.
