Online Training Required trainings and their frequency are listed below.

Training is required for all personnel listed on the IBC protocol, including the PI, and must be completed prior to beginning work in the laboratory. Please read the training requirements below carefully.

ALL Research Safety training modules are available in the SciShield Course Directory - https://uky.scishield.com/raft/training/courses

Training (with links) Frequency Who Should Complete this training?
Biological Safety Every 3 years Lab personnel working with biohazardous materials.
Plant Biosafety Every 3 years Lab personnel working with biohazardous materials associated with plants and/or plant pathogens may take this course in lieu of Biological Safety training.

Chemical Hygiene/Laboratory Safety (General Awareness)

Chemical Hygiene/Laboratory Safety (Annual Refresher)

Annually All lab personnel.

Hazardous Waste

*Note-hazardous waste training is the only training module NOT in the SciShield Course Directory

Annually All lab personnel.
Blood Borne Pathogens (BBP) Annually Lab personnel working with or potentially exposed to human blood, bodily fluids, or other potentially infectious materials (OPIM) in a research laboratory must complete this training annually.
Viral Vectors Prior to initiating work with viral vectors, then as needed Lab personnel working with viral vectors (ex. adenovirus, adeno-associated virus, lentivirus, etc.) must complete Viral Vectors training prior to initiating work with viral vectors and retaken as needed (ex. prior to initiating work with a new viral vector system).
Autoclave Prior to operating an autoclave Lab personnel that will operate an autoclave on UK properties.
Biological Safety Cabinets (BSCs) Prior to working in a BSC Lab personnel that will utilize a biological safety cabinet (BSC).
Dual Use Research of Concern Once Principal Investigators are required to complete Dual Use Research of Concern (DURC) training as they are ultimately responsible for ensuring that their research is properly reviewed for DURC to ensure continued funding from United States Government Funding agencies and/or the National Institutes of Health.

Laboratory-Specific Training

Laboratory-Specific Training is provided by the Principal Investigator (or their designee, such as a Lab Manager) to all lab members and must be completed prior to beginning work in the laboratory. The checklist available HERE may be used by University of Kentucky research laboratories to document laboratory-specific safety training. Other training on materials and procedures specific to your laboratory shall be added and documented as needed. Laboratory-Specific Training documentation for all lab members shall be stored in the laboratory's Laboratory Safety Manual.
